Alfie the Amphicar - Children's Book

Personal / Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School

Instead of having 40 hours of community service to graduate my high school has 20 hours plus a senior project. This project must be something that will help you learn either a skill or make some type of impact like raising money. You also need to be able to present this learning to a panel of high school staff and must include documentation on time spent, professional connections, and be able to present professionally.

Mine was to write a children’s story where I learned not only about the art of story writing but also about illustrating both with pencil but also editing in Photoshop. To make my story even more a reality my professional connection was with a printing company Book 1 One. I talked with them and learned all about the specifications for printing and binding that all authors must consider when making their books print-ready.

For the final part of my project, I went back to my old elementary school in my hometown where I did a reading of the story with one of their first-grade classes. I talked with them about what they got from the story and answered questions they had about it.

Now at this point, I had been planning to have the book published but that was going to take a very long time to happen so I ended the formal portion of the project there and presented this to my Senior Project panel. I still plan to have my story published so I am currently working with McSea Books in Maine to have my story published. I also have funded a potential business that would like to sell the book at Amphicar Tours in Naples Maine. I have the project a bit on the back burner for now but I am going to move forward with publication and possibly local sales.
